Nutrition Tip #5
The Importance of Raw Meaty Bones!
First in a series of articles

I believe that if a dog is to become and remain healthy, his diet must be based on RAW meaty bones.  I want to stress RAW Bones! You know dogs Love bones and yet many people think they know better than the dogs and deny their pups what they instinctively crave!  I am sure they want what is best for their pup but their love is actually causing their dog's harm.

As a result, dogs, which for thousands of years have relied on bones as the most important part of their diet, are suffering health problems at  all stages of life, in innumerable ways.

Are Bones  Dangerous?

The answer is YES but only if they are cooked!

Cooked bones are harder, more brittle and splinter more  easily. They are the ones most likely to get caught in the mouth, pierce the  intestines or the rectum. Apart from becoming dangerous, cooked bones lose most of their nutritional value when heated above 118 degrees. This includes the  essential fatty acids, (EFA's) the fat-soluble vitamins, the proteins and all antioxidants and anti-aging properties!

Cooked bones are bad news  for dogs.

DOGS ARE NOT DESIGNED TO DEAL WITH COOKED BONES.

While cooked bones are potentially fatal to dogs, raw bones, in my experience, and in the experience of numerous dog breeders and veterinarians, is the only single food item that guarantees a dog will have excellent health.

All Dogs Can Eat Bones

Dogs are scavengers by nature. For thousands of years dogs have cleaned up the carcasses of other animals that were composed mostly of raw meaty bones. That ability still remains. The huge food companies have put fear into the dog owners for the sole purpose of pedaling their dog food! You might ask," Jon! How can you say this when you are advocating Purebred dog food all the time?" Canidae is made from quality ingredients without chemicals or byproducts. I know the owners who are knowledgeable dog breeders and believe in  their product. For the price of Purebred dog food you can't find better nutrition for you dog. I depend on Purebred to comprise about 50% of my dog's  diet and the other 50% you are learning by subscribing to this newsletter! By  using Purebred, I know my dogs are getting the best of both worlds. Age or size makes no difference. The quicker you start your dogs on raw meaty bones the healthier they will become. You might have to get their teeth and gums cleaned  to correct the problems that dry food has created but this will be the last time.

Next time I will discuss why bones are a perfect food for our dogs and exactly what amazing nutritional value they are!  No need for expensive supplements once you learn to feed bones!

Training Tip #5
The  Heal!
========================================================
Review last Issue's Training Tip on Getting Their Attention.

Once you have their  attention, "the heal" is the next logical command. I usually train 10 to 16 week puppies to sit and lie down on a platform but if they are past that stage, healing is first.
Start off with your dog on your left side. Step forward  with your left foot. If he doesn't immediately follow, pop your leash and say  No!  Then good boy when he makes the move to follow. Take a few steps in the  same direction and praise him if he is walking by your side. If he lunges ahead do not hold him back.  Instead pop the leash with a No! Change direction on him  and repeat command. Praise when he follows your direction. When the leash  pulls taut say his name, and "Heel" as you make a sharp U-turn to the right. The dog will be behind you and run to catch up. When he does praise him.
Once he  has mastered the basics, gradually add speed and turns. I always keep pieces of turkey hot dogs to reinforce the praise and to help motivate him.
If you want  him to sit when you stop, exaggerate your hand to swing in front of your dog and  push on his chest with the command to sit. Slightly pull up on your leash while pushing back on his chest. If you are not getting through to him, then add pressure to his hind end into a sit position. I would only add the sit to a heel if the dog has had experience with the sit command.

Health Tip #4
Yogurt for Excellent  Health!
===============================================
Plain yogurt,  with the living culture present, is an excellent food for dogs.  This is because  it is a live food.  In many ways it is like one of the wild dog's natural foods,  feces, which also derives its principal food value from the fact that it is full  of living and dead bacteria.  It is the presence of this bacterial culture that  gives yogurt some of its most important health giving properties for your dog.
Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium, high-class protein, vitamins including the B vitamins and vitamin A, enzymes and of course energy as carbohydrates, protein and fat.

The bacteria present in yogurt are friendly bacteria.  They will live happily in your dog's bowels as part of your  dog's normal flora. In this role they will produce more of their probiotics,  enzymes and vitamins that will be absorbed in the bowels to the rest of the  body.

Yogurt can be a great benefit to a dog with diarrhea, particularly when it is assumed the normal healthy bacteria has been replaced by unfriendly pathogenic bacteria, or where the balance of bacteria in the gut have been upset by the use of broad spectrum antibiotics. Yogurt normalizes the bacteria in the  bowel.

If your dog must take antibiotics have the yogurt ready!  The  yogurt protects against the killing effect that antibiotics have on the normal bacteria in the bowel. This is extremely useful when the use of these  antibiotics cause your dog to develop diarrhea.

CCS Basic  Supplement
(Weeks Supply For One Dog)
========================================================
In a food  processor add:

1 part each of (as many as you like) greens or veggies
(I use Broccoli, Spinach and Parsley)

1 cup oil (canola oil is good) (optional)

A few cloves of crushed garlic
(Natural flea deterrent among many health benefits)

Teaspoon ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar)

1 Pint Natural plain yogurt (probiotics)
(To promote nutrition utilization and  digestion)

3000 IU of vitamin E
(To prevent oil from going rancid in dog's system)

5000 mg of vitamin C
(Along with E an excellent antioxidant, skeletal benefits for older dogs)

This formula should change by varying ingredients to include as many different fruits and vegetables as possible.  I have found that over ripe fruits are more accepted by my dogs.

Add to your dog's food once per day gradually until you reach a  tablespoon portion. Double this amount if digestive or signs of infection are evident.
