Why You’ll Love It

These dazzling chocolate covered strawberries are ready in under 30 minutes (and that includes letting the chocolate harden).

Plus, they’re much less expensive than trying to buy them. These decorated chocolate strawberries are about $5.00 each! I got an entire pound of strawberries (closer to a dozen) at my grocery store for half that.

I also love that you can decorate these any way you want. Add sprinkles, drizzle with colorful candy melts, and make them your own for any holiday or season. It’s a fun activity to do together (and enjoy the results) for date night too.

What You Need: Ingredients

Microwave Chocolate Covered Strawberries (Easy Recipe) - Dinners Done Quick (2)
  • 1 pound fresh strawberries
  • 12-ounce bag semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 Tbsp butter or coconut oil (or more as needed)
  • Sprinkles or candy melt for decoration (optional)

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • Strawberries. The larger the strawberries the better, and if you can find ones with stems it will make life easier. Also choose good looking ones with little bruising. You can also substitute pineberries if preferred, or other types of fruit like apples and orange slices
  • Chocolate. Dark, milk, and white chocolate all work fine as well. I like the sweetness balance with the semi-sweet
  • Butter. It’s important to add a little bit of fat to the chocolate so that it doesn’t become overly brittle when hard. Butter and coconut oil are the two most common choices, but you can use other neutral oils or even shortening in a pinch. If your chocolate starts to seize, add some more oil and reheat it slightly
  • Decorations. If you want to use sprinkles, pour them in a small bowl so you can roll the strawberries in them immediately after dipping. Drizzling can be done later, after the strawberries start to set
  • If you plan to drizzle colored candy melts, you can use a spoon, a few toothpicks, a piping bag, or a ziploc with the corner cut out to create even lines across your strawberries

Recipe FAQs

Do Strawberries Need to Be Cold Before Dipping in Chocolate?

No, strawberries do not need to be cold before dipping in chocolate. In fact, the chocolate adheres best to room temperature strawberries.

It is recommended that you remove your berries from the fridge about 30 minutes ahead of time to warm them up before dipping.

How Do You Get Chocolate to Stick to Strawberries?

Chocolate sticks best to room temperature strawberries that are completely dry.

Make sure to thoroughly dry your berries ahead of time. In addition, use berries without bruising. If you need to cut off bad sections, the chocolate will not adhere to the juicy interior of the berry.

What Can I Put Chocolate Covered Strawberries On So They Don’t Stick?

Put chocolate covered strawberries on wax paper or a silicone baking mat so they don’t stick while hardening.

For faster cooling of the chocolate, pop them in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

Do You Refrigerate Chocolate Covered Strawberries After Dipping?

You can refrigerate chocolate covered strawberries after dipping to help set the chocolate. However, once they are cooled, the strawberries are best kept in a container at room temperature for flavor and consistency.

Your berries should be consumed within 2 days from the time you make them.

Why Are My Chocolate Covered Strawberries Sweating?

If your chocolate covered strawberries are sweating, that indicates excess moisture. If the berries were cold when you dipped them, they will release moisture as they warm up. Storing finished berries in the fridge attracts moisture and condensation is normal there.

Always make sure to start with dry berries at room temperature, and store at room temperature after they are cooled and set. This should avoid most sweating issues.

Recipe Pro Tips

  • Make sure your berries are completely dry, free of blemishes, and room temperature for best results
  • Do not cut blemishes off and then attempt to dip – the chocolate will not stick to the berry interior
  • If your berries don’t have stems, use a stick or fork placed near the top (where the stem would be) to assist you when dipping
  • My chocolate was melted completely after 1 ½ minutes in a 1000W microwave. Other wattages may vary

Notes

  • This amount of chocolate should be enough for around 24 large strawberries. While you can reduce the amount, I find it’s harder to dip and coat it well if your bowl isn’t full
