Bacon Weave Taco Shell Recipe | DudeFoods.com (2024)

I know that tacos with shells made out of bacon have been done before, but none of the ones I’ve seen looked very appetizing to me. It seems like people sort of took the easy way out when making them and just tossed their bacon over a metal object, made sure the strips overlapped a little so they’d stick together and either baked or deep fried it like that so their shells just end up looking like squares of bacon that had been folded in half. Long story short, most of the bacon taco shells out there just don’t look very taco-shaped.

For my bacon taco shell I started off the same way I did when I made my Bacon Weave Quesdailla, by creating a square bacon weave, cooking it in my oven at 350° for about 15 minutes and then placing an upside down bowl over it and tracing around it with a knife until I was left with a circular bacon weave. After that I hung it over a couple kabob sticks that were balanced across empty beer bottles and left it like that for a few minutes so it would keep its shape. I’m sure that there was probably something better I could have draped it over, but you’ve gotta make do with what you’ve got right?

Since I wasn’t quite sure if beer bottles were safe to put in the oven I swapped them out for a couple pint glasses, put them on a baking sheet, hung my bacon weave taco shell between them and slid it back into my oven for another ten minutes so it could finish cooking.

Granted, I’m sure the beer bottles would have been fine, but I didn’t know if the labels would burn or if the glue that holds them to the bottle is toxic. Then again, when you’re eating stuff like this on a regular basis a little bit of toxic glue should probably be the least of your worries….

In the end my Bacon Weave Taco ended up looking— and tasting— way better than I ever could have imagined. Once it was done baking I filled it to the brim with seasoned ground beef, sour cream, lettuce, tomato and shredded cheese and took a bite. It was completely amazing, and aside from that the shell actually looked exactly like a real taco shell!

Why didnt you just use a taco shell to get the shape right?

Maybe an ortega stand and stuff??

I would want the bacon weave ON the taco shepl!!

I get it if your going for a keto taco but cmon man!!

I wanted the bacon weave to actually be the shell, not just be wrapped around the shell. I guess I could have used a taco shell to shape it and then just removed the taco shell, but then I would have had to go to the grocery store and buy a bunch of taco shells just to waste one.

I am going to try this but do it on all the way on the stove. I’m going to use my cast iron skillet weave the bacon put it in the hot pan cook it on one side and tell you know that it will not unweave when flipped flip it over continue cooking for another minute or two on that side that’s all the leave bacon takes a couple minutes put cheese on top scrambled egg turn it over like an omelet turn every once in awhile to cheese is melted bam Taco is done

Use a cast iron press over the top of it while cooking and then you won’t have to flip it.

I’ve been trying differnt bacons and stumbled upon them a few years ago. . .Now, if I send a present that doesn’t include bacon, I am burned in effigy. . . because NOTHING say’s Merry Christmas, Happy Birth, Father’s, Mother’s, Armistance, Labor, Sun, Mon, Tues, Wednes, Thurs, Fri or Satur, Day like smoked pork products.

How about if you cleaned your beer bottles? As a home brewer, removing labels from beer bottles is something I do regularally. Some beers are easier to remove than others. Most real German beers (HofBrau, Bitburger, Franziskaner, Weihenstephan, Erdinger, etc) – these labels are practically falling off when you buy them. A overnight soak in water with bleach should remove them. The dishwasher finishes the rest.

Plus of course, you get to drink good German beer. 🙂 Of course you have Spotted Cow which will give German beer a run for its money. It is too bad I can’t get any in Northern VA. 🙁

The labels were on the beer bottles because I just drank those two beers as I was making my Bacon Weave Taco and I needed something to balance the kabob sticks across when I put it in the oven.

What is your favorite non-special order bacon, basically the over the counter type, find in the local Piggly-Wiggly bacon. (I don’t have Piggly-Wiggly near me, nor have I probably ever been to one, but when discussing Bacon, I found it appropriate)

I usually buy Nueske’s, but I think maybe it’s just so easy to find all over the place where I am because it’s made in the same state I live in. Here in Milwaukee though you can find it at pretty much every grocery store.

Well, lets just say LUCKY. . .I have to mail order my Nueske’s. . not that it is a bad thing, I just have to plan ahead. I have found a local dairy (they still deliver milk to my house in glass bottles) that makes bacon, that is very good, not Nueske’s, but still pretty tasty. Given options, Nueske’s is my go to as well. Thanks!

I wasn’t really counting, but I’d guess about 12. Since it was cut into a circle though the slices on the ends aren’t full length slices, so it at least isn’t quite as bad as just eating 12 slices of bacon on their own.

I can easly knock out 12 slices of Applegates every Sunday morning. BTW, everyone thinks bacon is horrible for you. It really isn’t. 12 slices is only about 400 calories and 12g saturated fat. Almost any resturant burger is much worse.

Fats don’t clog your arteries. Carbohydrates do. And you generally have to already be obese for that to happen. That’s why people that eat ketogenic, low carb/high fat, diets lower their cholesterol so easily. The doctors were paid off to tell you these things.

Who cares what it looks like? Is it made out of bacon? Yes. Will it tast delicious? Yes. Will it make a turd? Yes. All you did was lessen the amount of bacon in the taco by cutting the corners off. That means you wasted bacon. FAIL.

I didn’t waste the bacon from the corners, I still ate it. It’s not like I cut it off and just threw it in the trash.

I care what it looks like because in addition to tasting good, food should be visually appealing. If something doesn’t look appealing do you really want to eat it? I don’t.

The point was to make a delicious bacon shell taco that actually LOOKED like a taco, because the ones I’ve seen don’t. It’s like throwing a pile of meat and cheese on a plate and calling it a sandwich.

Fun stuff – that I can work on a healthier version. 🙂 Warmest regards, Lisa

This is awesome. In the 90s, the Taco Bell by my house in VA did BLT soft tacos. It was a soft taco shell, crumbled bacon, lettuce, tomato, and ranch dressing. I’m going to try this, but I’m going to make it a BLT Taco and only stuff it with lettuce and tomato. I’ll add some ranch dressing for throwback tastebud purposes.

Thanks for the great taco post! I look forward to eating it!

Thank you Nick!!! In my book you are a GENIUS!!! My Family LOVES BACON and Taco’s. I am going to make this the next time we make taco’s, I will surprise the family with them. I will make them for breakfast for sure, instead of the breakfast burrito’s and fruit. I will do an omelet filled taco shell…now that sounds real good.
I reposted your bacon taco shell on my facebook page… I gave all the credit to you and your blog.
Thank you again for your creative idea. You truly are a Genius.

If you drink good beer like Spotted Cow or Hofbrau, removing the labels is easy. Just put them in the dishwasher. It will take the labels right off. Also a good way to clean bottles if you are brewing your own beer.

    OMG!
Must be sent from the sky above. This recipe is going to be my favorite. I mean, who doesn’t love bacon and to add my all time meal, le mac n’ cheese. I definitely have to try this out.
Question. How does it shell hold up while eating, will it crack and break apart and turn into like a taco/bacon salad?

The fact that the bacon is woven together actually helps the shell stay together really really well.

See its been awhile since this went up. didn’t see anyone mention it, but an obvious breakfast taco if filled with eggs, cheese, onions, peppers, guac, even more bacon. Or a meat lovers and add some sausage, ham with the eggs.

Great minds think alike! I followed it up with a breakfast version, Choco Taco version, double decker version, Arby’s version, and then a couple more than I never ended up posting.
