I made this little crochet mushroom bag as part of Underground Crafter’s Giftstravaganza Crochet Along. For 31 Days leading up to the holiday season, crochet designers are sharing free patterns perfect for gifting!
This week’s theme is crochet gifts for babies, kids, and teens, and since my kids are all squarely in the tween and teen demographic now, I wanted to make something that I knew would be a hit with that crowd.
My daughter and her friends have all been very into the cottagecore aesthetic lately – strawberries, frogs, fairies, and *especially* cute little mushrooms – so I decided to make a mushroom bag.

Make Your Own Crochet Mushroom Bag
This little bag consists of a ribbed drawstring pouch covered by a mushroom top and a crossbody strap. The finished bag is about 7 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide.
Materials:
- 6 oz. Number 4 worsted weightcotton yarn (I used Lily’s Sugar and Cream, two balls of ecru and one ball of red.)
- Size H (5.00 mm) Crochet Hook
- 1 inch button
- 1 yard 5 mm cotton macrame cord
- Sewing Needle and Matching Thread
- Yarn Needle
- Stitch Markers
- Safety Pins
- Scissors
Crossbody Mushroom Bag Pattern

Gauge:8 sc = 2 in.
Note: The body of the bag, mushroom top, strap, spots, and drawstring toggle are all crocheted separately and then pieced together. You will find all of the piece patterns below followed by assembly instructions.
Abbreviations Used:
- Chain (ch)
- Slip Stitch (sl st)
- Single Crochet (sc)
- Half Double Crochet (hdc)
- Stitch (st)
- Space (sp)
Special Stitches Used:
- Back Loop Only Slip Stitch (blo sl st):Work just like a regular slip stitch except insert the hook into the back loop only of the base stitch.
- Back Loop Only Half Double Crochet (blo hdc):Work just like a regular half double crochet stitch except insert the hook into the back loop only of the base stitch.
- Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog) –Insert hook into next stitch and draw up loop, insert hook into next stitch after that and draw up another loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw loop through all three hooks. Sc2tog formed.
Mushroom Drawstring Bag Base Pattern
The round base of the bag is worked in a continuous spiral without slip stitching to the beginning of the round. I recommend using stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round.
Round 1: Working with the cream yarn, ch 2, 5 sc in second ch from hook (5 sc).
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around (10 sc).
Round 3: *Sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (15 sc).
Round 4: *Sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (20 sc).
Round 5: *Sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (25 sc).
Round 6: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (30 sc).
Round 7: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (35 sc).
Round 8: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (40 sc).
Round 9: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (45 sc).
Round 10: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (50 sc). Blo sl st to next st.
At this point, the bag switches to being worked in rows that form the sides of the bag. Do not finish off your yarn. Just work the rows perpendicular to the edge of the round base just created (See image below).
Row 1: Ch 32, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each remaining ch (30 hdc), blo sl st in next 2 sts along edge of bag base, turn.
Row 2: Blo hdc in each st across (30 blo hdc), ch 2, turn.
Row 3: 2 blo hdc, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 26 blo hdc, blo sl st in next 3 sts along edge of bag base, turn.
Row 4: 26 blo hdc, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp, 2 blo hdc, ch 2, turn.
Row 5: 30 blo hdc, blo sl st in next 2 sts along edge of bag base, turn.
Row 6: 30 blo hdc, ch 2, turn.
Row 7: 2 blo hdc, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 26 blo hdc, blo sl st in next 3 sts along edge of bag base, turn.
Row 8: 26 blo hdc, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp, 2 blo hdc, ch 2, turn.
Rows 9-40: Repeat Rows 5-9 7 times. Finish off yarn leaving a long tail. Lay the edge of the last row crocheted on top of the base of the first row and sew together.
Mushroom Top Pattern
The mushroom top is worked in a continuous spiral without slip stitching to the beginning of the round. I recommend using stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round.
Round 1: Working with the red yarn, start with a magic loop, work 6 sc in the magic loop, pull to tighten.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc).
Round 3: *Sc, 2 sc, repeat from * around (18 sc).
Round 4: *Sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (24 sc).
Round 5: *Sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (30 sc).
Round 6: Sc in each st around (30 sc).
Round 7: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (36 sc).
Round 8: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (42 sc).
Round 9: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (48 sc).
Round 10: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (54 sc).
Round 11: Sc in each st around (54 sc).
Round 12: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (60 sc).
Round 13: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (66 sc).
Round 14: Sc in each st around (66 sc).
Rounds 15-18: Repeat Round 14.
Round 19: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc2tog, repeat from * around (60 sc).
Round 20: *Sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc2tog, repeat from * around (54 sc).
Round 21: Sc in next 27 sts, ch 9, sl st to base of last st, sc in next 27 sts, skip 1 st, sl st. Finish off and weave in ends.
Large Mushroom Spot Pattern (Make 3)
The large and small mushroom spots are worked in a continuous spiral without slip stitching to the beginning of the round. You may want to use a stitch marker.
Round 1: With cream yarn, work 6 sc in magic loop, pull to tighten.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc).
Round 3: *Sc, 2 sc, repeat from * around (18 sc), sl st to next st, finish off leaving long tail.
Small Mushroom Spot Pattern (Make 4)
Round 1: With cream yarn, work 6 sc in magic loop, pull to tighten.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc), sl st to next st, finish off leaving long tail.
Strap Pattern
The strap is made using short rows of half double crochet stitches. Repeat the pattern until the strap is the desired length. My strap has 138 rows and is 50 inches long.
Row 1: Ch 6, hdc in 3 ch from hook, hdc in each remaining ch (4 hdc), ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Hdc in each st across (4 hdc), ch 1, turn.
Repeat Row 2 until strap reaches desired length.
Drawstring Toggle Pattern
The drawstring toggle is a small tube of single crochet stitches worked in a continuous spiral without slip stitching to the beginning of the round. You may want to use a stitch marker.
Round 1: Ch 12, sl st to first ch, ch 1, sc in each ch around (12 sc).
Round 2: Sc in each st around (12 sc).
Round 3: Sc in each st around (12 sc), sl st to next st, finish off leaving a long tail.
Mushroom Bag Assembly Instructions
When you have all of the pieces of your bag crocheted, you are ready to assemble! Make sure all ends have been woven in except for where the pattern mentions leaving a long tail.
Step One. Sew on Mushroom Spots.
- I recommend that before sewing on the spots, you take a minute to plan out their placement. You can use safety pins to hold them in place as you plan out your design.
- Thread the long tail of each spot onto your yarn needle and sew the spot in place on the mushroom top.
- After securing each spot in place, weave in the ends, and trim off the excess yarn.
Step Two. Assemble Drawstring and Toggle.
- Weave a length of cotton rope or cord through the holes in the top of the bag base so the tails come out of the two front center holes. (If you don’t have the cotton cord, you can also crochet an icord using the cream yarn following this tutorial.)
- Slide the toggle tube over the ends of the cotton cord. Making sure to not stitch through the cord, use the toggle’s long tail to sew through the center of the toggle so that it fits fairly snugly around the two ends of the cord.
- Tie a knot in each end of the cord and trim off excess cord. Unravel the end of the cord below the knot to create a tassel look.
- Pull on the drawstrings and slide the toggle up to close the bag.
Step Three. Attach Mushroom Top and Strap.
- Start by sewing the button onto the front of the bag an inch or two below the drawstring toggle. (You can use the mushroom top to help you position the button.)
- Slide the button through the loop on the front of the mushroom top to help you find the right placement for the back edge of the mushroom top on the back side of the bag pouch.
- Use a safety pin to hold the mushroom top in the right spot.
- With a length of red yarn and a yarn needle, attach the edge of the mushroom top to the back of the pouch. Keep your stitches between the center two holes on the back of the pouch (you will only be sewing through about a 2 inch length). After you have securely attached the mushroom top to the back of the bag, weave in your ends a bit and trim off the excess yarn.
- Taking care to keep your strap from twisting, line up the edges of the strap with where you just attached the mushroom top to the bag. Using the long tail left on the strap piece, attach the ends of the strap to the mushroom top. Weave in ends and trim off excess yarn.
Once your strap is attached, your mushroom bag is all finished and ready to gift! (Or keep for yourself!)
